Mr. Lewis makes a wise observation.*
Just because I know that forgiveness of those who do wrong will help free me from resentment (and that often the jumping off point for that forgiveness is the understanding that the people who do harm are themselves spiritually sick), that knowledge does not necessarily endow me with the ability to forgive.
Sometimes, all good knowledge can do is point the way.
We must still travel the distance and discover how to apply what we have learned.
Sometimes it makes sense to start small.
*Hat tip to Anne Lamott for reminding me of this quote.
I will start with that person who gets in front of some item I want to pick up at the grocery store! She doesn't just "go first"--no, she stands there and thinks and thinks and thinks. Maybe she is calculating the price per ounce, or thinking through a recipe? Once I shrugged and took my cart for a slow walk around the aisle, thinking she'd be gone when I got back. Nope. Still there. Sometimes I pretend to be looking at other items, waiting for her to move. And then I'M the person blocking someone else. BUT I find I breathe easier if I say a little prayer for the lady's health and well-being rather than curse her for blocking my way... GOOD QUOTE, probably needed that before doing my Thanksgiving shopping :o)
