For me, when I gave up the idea of a punishing God, I had to let go of the idea of a rewarding God, too.
And ultimately, isn't it just me trying to control God, if I can, with my behavior, influence what God does?

He's not a punishing God, or a rewarding God. He's a real God. When I talk to Him it's real. When He talks to me through my life, it's real. When I'm faced with a challenge, it's really from Him. When I receive blessings, it's really from Him. Not reward, not punishment - it's reality.

Of course, one can also let go of the very idea of "god".

Right - exactly the idea. As Ebby told Bill: "Why don't you choose your own Higher Power." 1st step is to realize that I'm not a higher power. Gosh - I keep forgetting that!
