I'm glad you recommended Al-Anon! In AA the solution is clear -- "if you want what we have and are willing to go to any length to get it, then you are ready to take certain steps" -- but what if your family member or friend doesn't want it enough to do what it takes? That is where Al-Anon comes in. In Al-Anon we learn the "3 Cs" -- that we did not CAUSE and cannot CONTROL or CURE another person's alcoholism/drug addiction/mental health, etc. We also learn not to create a crisis and not to get in the way of one. If you trust your HP enough to stay sober in AA, then Al-Anon will help you trust HP even when others are experiencing the consequences of their drinking and using: jails, institutions and death. I am a grateful "double winner" and often find myself suggesting Al-Anon when a fellow AA is troubled by their messed up relatives or friends!
