AA suggests -- and in my experience, living comfortably in sobriety demands -- rigorous honesty.
But it's always worth remembering that honesty, without compassion, can be a kind of brutality.

I have been told that the rigorous honesty applies to ourselves, not to others, so that takes out the brutality factor right there.
